In previous years, The Border Theatre has challenged the limitations of physical presentation in performance; this year we seek to explore the creation process itself. Artists of every medium are invited to audition or sign on for this journey.

The concept is simple: All artists will be given three source words with which to develop their own creations. The Exhibitions will fluidly present the various works–whether those are plays, film, dance, sculpture, visual, photography, etc.–and highlight the immense creativity of all participating artists.

Auditions and interviews will be held May 26 from 2 to 5 PM at Glasbox. Reserving an audition slot is required. To reserve a slot, sign on to the project or for further information, please contact the Border Theatre at: info@bordertheatre.org or 915.412.5283 before May 26.

The Border Theatre is proud to present:

Exhibitions in Dis/Connection 2011

Capture the innovative work of The Border Theatre with Exhibitions in Dis/Connection and help the company celebrate their one year anniversary!

The event integrates art installations, sound design and dance with award-winning ten-minute plays which bleed fluidly together under a unifying principle conceived and established by the The Border Theatre performance ensemble members. The interceding outside works and installations directly influence the production concept as well as the daily performance.

Included are two plays from award-winning playwright and former El Pasoan Ryan Dowler.  His heartbreaking tale of loss, Maria or a Lullabye for a Cat and his touching, yet riotous Omar are highlights of the show along with the Heidelman Award-winning 3:59 AM by Marco Ramirez.

As a special thank you to the supportive El Paso community, Thursday September 22nd, 2011 will be a “Pay-What-You-Can-Performance.” Attendees will be able to pick their own price for admission to the event for this one night only.

Exhibitions in Dis/Connection runs September 22nd-25th and September 30th-October 2nd. It will be performed at Glasbox, 1500 Texas Ave, #Up. Doors open at 7 PM.

Tickets are $7 (except September 22nd) and can be purchased by cash at the door with 10% of all monies raised at the door to be donated to the Sunset Heights Block Party. Military, firefighters, and police officers receive free admission on Sundays.

The venue is located on the corner of Texas Avenue & Cotton Street in El Paso, TX. The space is accessible through a side door on Langtry Street. Street parking will be available.

Learn to use action as the fundamental tool for creating a performance. Award-winning guest director Raul Valles returns to lead this 5-day workshop, which attempts to form a consciousness that allows participants to perceive theater as the art of the actor’s body in action, in a state of representation, discovered from the personal depths of each actor and put to the service of a scene. It shows the actor and his body as the only indispensable element for performance and for establishing a profound contact between the performer and his truth, and the audience and their experiences. It is through action that a performance acquires a structure, a flow, a rhythm and a tone all of which are indispensable elements of stage work.

The workshop is aimed at experienced actors. Please come in comfortable clothes and shoes. The workshop involves a lot of physical activities and each session is 4 hours in length. One participant chosen at random will receive a free copy of “Un estudio sobre el actor” (A Study About the Actor), written by Raul Valles and Inet Simental, a book about how they developed their own theatrical vision and techniques, including the topics covered in the workshop.

About Raul Valles

Raúl Valles is an award-winning director, writer, playwright, theatrical researcher, and founding member of the former Teatro Necrotono group. His most recent shows include La Herencia de Edipo (The Inheritance of Oedipus), Madre Medea, Lemnos, Improv’, Bemorí and Santuario (Sanctuary).

La Herencia de Edipo participated in several national and international festivals throughout Mexico, including Zacatecas, Chihuahua, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Durango. Valles won the Best Director award at the 2006 Chihuahua State Theatre Showcase and the play received the Official Selection of Mexico award by the UNESCO International Theater Institute. That same year, La Herencia de Edipo performed at the 9th International Theatre Festival in Tehran, Iran, winning the award for Best International Play. A year later, Valles was invited back to Tehran to direct Lemnos, a collaboration between Mexican and Iranian playwrights and actors. The play was presented at the 2008 Fadjr International Theater Festival.

While in Tehran, Valles conducted the workshop The Speaking Body and taught the course The Theatrical Action and its Origin at the University of Tehran and the Center for Acting Studies.

Valles has twice been awarded the David Alfaro Siqueiros scholarship by the state of Chihuahua as well as the PACMYC award. The latter, for his research into the rites, myths, dances and chants of the Rarámuri people that led to the creation of Bemorí.

In 2010, he developed Santuario, a show based on sacred texts, for the 6th Chihuahua International Festival.

Valles has taught numerous workshops and short courses at the Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua and his published books include: Hombres cosa hombres miedo, a collection of 5 plays; Un estudio sobre el actor (A Study About the Actor), a book of essays co-authored with Inet Simental; and his upcoming book, Rumbo a vacío, a collection of plays and part of the Official Selection of the 9th National Gathering of Young Playwrights, which took place in July of this year in Querétaro.

His articles and essays have been published in the journals Solar, Síntesis, in the Anuario de teatro 2007, and in Paso de Gato and Proceso.

The Border Theatre and APT Movement are proud to present:

Fermentation Nation

Fermentation Nation is APT Movement’s debut performance, which explores the obsession of the American youth with alcohol. Are they truly the consumers, or is alcohol consuming an entire generation?

The event showcases original choreography and powerful movement under the supervision of acclaimed dancers and Border Theatre Ensemble Members, Music Adame and Megan Aizpuro. The show features local talent and marks the launch of APT Movement as the most ambitious movement ensemble in the area dedicated to premiering original works.

Fermentation Nation incorporates artists of all disciplines into a collective event that highlights the talent of the local community while also ambitiously advancing the perception of “dance” as perceived by the Paso Del Norte community.

It will be performed June 17, 18 and 19 at Glasbox, 1500 Texas Ave, #Up.

Ugly Apples

Ugly Apples continues The Border Theatre tradition of exciting original work. The two thematically linked one-act plays (Forever Changes, written by Joel Murray and Kitten Kill Lion written by Austin Savage) combine for an intense exploration of love coming apart.

Both plays treat the story of a couple who find themselves unhappy, unsure about reality, and stuck in a claustrophobic apartment that seems to define their entire identities. Both of these couples are trapped within the confines of the self destructive world they have created for themselves, and the only way out is not a pretty one.

Ugly Apples contains nudity, sexual situations, violence, and adult language.

It will be performed April 1-3 and 8-10 at Glasbox, 1500 Texas Ave, #Up.

Doors open at 7 PM, perfomances start at 8 PM, $7

By the third night Ned was holding Q&A sessions and prodding off potential groupies. The performer from Beaumont, TX left a mark on El Pasoans with his heart breaking stories of love, lust, betrayal and friends on death row. Ned Shapiro collaborated with Border Theatre member Ryan Perry (although Ned insisted on calling him Brian Carry) who accompanied Ned on guitar and vibrato when needed. Together they gave the audience a strange brew of musical numbers that followed the unfolding narrative of Ned’s romantic adventures.

He’s broken hearts and bellowed out ballads.  His performances have led to standing room only performances from Oxnard, California to Omaha, Nebraska and The Border Theatre is proud to have booked him for his El Paso debut. Our first guest artist performer will make you laugh, cry, and shake your hips. Come spend an evening with Ned Shapiro as he waxes poetically on the greatness of his life and his search for love.

Local poets, writers, and talent of all kinds gathers together to share work, ideas, etc. On Saturday January 29th, the Barbed Wire Open Mic series will continue.

This month the feature performers will be The Border Theatre, live music from The Smash and guest DJ One Man Jazz. The event is hosted by The Percolator located on 217 N. Stanton. It’s free and starts at 7 p.m.
